"We believe that working with beautiful colours and beautiful textured fibres brings joy to the soul. To be able to create unique and exciting works of art one needs the whole spectrum of colour and a great range of textures. That is what we help our customers with."
The Thread Room is a family business which dates back to the 1980's when Marta Cantos - the creator of the Marta's Yarns Hand-dyed collection of yarns - began experimenting with colour and fibre. Having studied textile arts and colour theory, Marta embarked on a journey of hand-dying which saw a wonderfully fresh palette of colours emerge from her dye-pots. These yarns were sold to designers and yarn shops across Australia under the Gippsland Designer Colours label.
Marta went on to complete a Fine Arts degree and in 2001 opened her first shop front in Melbourne - Marta's Yarns. Marta's husband, Jorge, assisted in the shop and the dye-house operations and her daughter, Patricia, was a close business and design collaborator until Marta's passing in January 2007.
In June 2008 the business was handed-over to the next generation with Patricia becoming the owner and changing the name to The Thread Room to reflect the new direction of the business. The unique range of colours developed by Marta continued to be sold under the Marta's Yarns Hand-dyed collection label.
In August 2009 our shop front was closed and the business moved online.
In April 2013 the online shop closed. Patricia now uses the Marta's Yarns collection exclusively in her fine art and knitwear design practice. www.patriciacantos.com.au
